Sticky Trade at Late Worcester Sale

A relatively small entry of sheep, compounded by only 5 in-lamb females forward, resulted in a poor clearance of only 27 being sold at McCartneys at Worcester Market.

Buyers were relatively thin on the ground, some undoubtedly being put off by a lack of in-lamb ewes, and several sheep failed to make their reserves. However, repeating his achievement of the earlier Worcester Sale in August by taking Reserve Champion in the show, and then going one better by topping the sale, was Sam Inns, whose shearling ewe Castle Hill Dandylion (lot 10) sold for 550gns and going to join the Brickfield flock of K Barwell, Daventry.

Overall Champion, lot 30 Hayberries 00843 3326E, consigned by breeders Peter & Susan Addison, took second top price of 400gns, and was bought by S Broomhall to join the imaginatively named Baa Humbug flock in Stoke on Trent. Next top in the ewe lambs was lot 33, Castle Hill Emma, who sold for 370gns and making the long journey up to Co Durham with the Addisons.

Only 3 shearling ewes were forward, and standing second in price in this section to the sale topper was lot 9, Pen Llyn Dotty, consigned by Will Williams and selling for 310gns to Mr & Mrs Doughty’s Meer Booth flock. She was joined by lot 8, Pen Llyn Dewdrop, going to the same purchaser, this time for 200gns.

Only 2 aged ewes were entered, both Mill Thorn ladies, both consigned by Gail Shrubsall, and both bought by new member Miss C Gibbs, Memory Lane flock, Bodenham, Herefordshire, for 190gns & 150gns respectively.

Only 2 out of the 4 ram lambs forward found new flocks – topping this section was Hayberries Executor, lot 2,1st in his show class and making 280gns. He’s away, with the show champion, to join the Baa Humbug flock. The other male sold was lot 5, Barmoll Elvis, making 250gns, paid by E & V Griffiths, Presteigne, Powys.

Many thanks must go to judge Stuart Craig, Craigies flock, for making the long trip down from Melrose in the Scottish Borders and to Joan Rowlands for inspecting, scribing and stewarding.

Averages:

2 Ram Lambs 264gns

2 Aged Ewes 170gns

3 Shearling Ewes 352gns

21 Ewe Lambs 176gns.
